The Challenge

Before you apply, here’s what you need to know:
We’re looking for the best devs, engineers, coders and hackers who are excited to build AI Agents.
A few things to take into consideration when submitting your application:

For the purposes of this hackathon, an AI agent is defined as: A software entity that operates autonomously within a defined environment, capable of making decisions and taking actions to achieve its set goals based on its perception and interpretation of data, without human intervention.

This definition emphasizes the agent's autonomy, adaptability, and goal-oriented nature, which aligns with the understanding that AI agents are advanced beyond mere automation tools to entities that can independently "think" and adapt.

The best applications and final projects will demonstrate a clear understanding and implementation of an AI agent as defined, capable of operating autonomously, adapting to its environment, and making decisions toward achieving predefined goals.

● Autonomy: The AI agent operates without continuous direct human oversight after initial configuration. It should be capable of self-management to a considerable extent.

● Adaptability: The agent adapts to changes in its environment. This could be demonstrated through learning mechanisms (like machine learning models) that adjust behavior based on new data.

● Technical Implementation: The solution employs appropriate algorithms, data structures, and possibly machine learning models.

● Decision Making: The agent makes decisions based on its programming and the data it processes. This requires a well-implemented algorithm that allows the agent to evaluate options and choose actions that align with its objectives.

● Goal-Oriented: The agent's actions are directed towards achieving specific objectives. This should be evident in the agent's design and operation.

● Documentation and Explanation: A well-prepared presentation and demo video that succinctly explain the project's value, operation, and technical merits.

● Non-Autonomous Software: Tools or applications that require continuous human input for operation. For instance, a standard CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) application without any autonomous decision-making capability.

● Pre-built Solutions: Utilizing entirely or mostly pre-built platforms or services (e.g., using a commercial chatbot platform to create a chatbot without significant customization or added functionality).

Note: we will allow a maximum of 20% of codebase deployed or built before the hackathon. The rest must be built during the timeframe of the hackathon by the team members enrolled in the hackathon.

● Irrelevant Technology Demonstrations: Projects that focus on showcasing a technology without integrating it into an autonomous, decision-making agent. For example, a machine learning model that predicts stock prices but doesn't make buy or sell decisions autonomously.

FAQ

Answers to the most frequently asked questions.

What is hackAIthon?

keyboard_arrow_down

HackAIthon a 2 day hackathon (June 4 & 5) focused on building AI agents. The 2024 HackAIthon looks a little different than 2023 – this time we’re looking for participants who come ready to build an AI agent. Competition will be steep, and we’re excited to see what everyone builds!

Who is the ideal applicant?

keyboard_arrow_down

This year we’re prioritizing applicants with existing experience building AI & ML tools as the hackathon will have limited educational sessions.

Should I enter as a team, or can I apply as a solo hacker?

keyboard_arrow_down

We are ideally looking for pre-formed teams ranging from 1-4 people, but if you have a great idea and are looking for collaborators, please say so in your application. On the flip side, if you want to participate but don't have an idea or team, feel free to apply and share your skillset and we will try to match you with someone who has an idea and is looking for collaborators.

How do I apply?

keyboard_arrow_down

Click the apply button above. Applications are due May 10th. This year, all attendees must submit an application with an idea. Only accepted applicants will be allowed to participate

When should I apply by, and when will I hear if I was accepted?

keyboard_arrow_down

We will begin reviewing applications on May 1st and do rolling acceptances. So apply early to increase your chances of getting a coveted spot! Once acceptances are sent out, we ask that you please confirm your spot. If you end up not being able to join, please let us know so we can let someone in from the waitlist.

What are the prizes for the winning teams?

keyboard_arrow_down

The grand prize will be $10K for the winning team. Two runners up will get $5k each.

Is HackAIthon free?

keyboard_arrow_down

Yes, attending the event is free, and meals will be provided. You must pay for your own travel and accommodation – no sleeping at the venue.

Can I work on my project before the hackathon?

keyboard_arrow_down

We will allow a maximum of 20% of codebase deployed or built before the hackathon. The rest must be built during the timeframe of the hackathon by the team members enrolled in the hackathon.

Can I participate virtually?

keyboard_arrow_down

Sorry, only registered attendees who check in in-person in San Francisco can participate. If one team member doesn’t check in, they can’t participate remotely even if the rest of the team is on-site. No virtual hackers allowed.

What criteria are you using to define an AI agent?

That’s all outlined in The Challenge section above - just scroll up and read more about what we’re looking for.
